Northside Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED)

Northside Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), continuously rated among the best in overall quality of care and customer satisfaction, treats major and minor medical and surgical emergencies. Northside Hospital's state-of-the-art facility is one of the country's first emergency facilities designed specifically for the patient.

The ED staff allays fears by advising patients with frequent progress reports on diagnosis and treatment. In Northside's ED, the medical services come to the patient and not vice-versa, therefore eliminating unnecessary patient transport and delays.

All Northside Emergency Associates physicians are board certified in Emergency Medicine.

Northside Hospital offers state-of-the-art Emergency Services at each of its hospitals in Atlanta and Forsyth, and both were designated as Nationally Accredited Chest Pain Centers in 2011. We are committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care in a timely manner.

Often referred to as the hospital’s ‘‘front door,’’ the emergency facilities provide emergency care to any medical, surgical or obstetrical patient.

The majority of emergency service patients are treated and discharged. However, should a patient require hospital admission or a surgical procedure, each hospital offers access to a comprehensive array of state-of-the-art support services.

Each of Northside's state-of-the-art emergency facilities features:
  • Private patient triage areas
  • Comfortable treatment rooms
  • HealthExpress/Fast Track - a minor illness and injury treatment center
  • A Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) outpatient observation unit (Atlanta and Forsyth only)
  • Streamlined, bedside admissions
  • Bedside tests (decreases the need for patient transport)
  • Board-certified emergency medicine physicians available 24-hours a day
  • Skilled, experienced staff trained in emergency medicine
  • Special services for women’s health issues
  • Private family room for families for sensitive needs
  • Easy access from major interstates

Emergency care for urgent needs such as minor illness or injury may be treated in Northside Hospital's "health express" area. This area is staffed by highly qualified and trained nurse practitioners and physician assistants employed by Northside Emergency Associiates who are overseen by one of the attending emergency department physicians on duty. This area promises prompt/efficient treatment with a minimal wait time.

Completed in 1995, Northside Hospital’s 25,000 square foot Level Two Emergency Department (ED) ranks number one in metro Atlanta in overall patient satisfaction, treating more than 51,000 patients in 2010. The ED has 28 treatment rooms, plus five health express rooms.

The ED at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, with 31 beds, treated 51,400+ patients in 2010. Completed in 2004, the new ED was designed utilizing a tranquil environment yet incorporating the latest in cutting-edge technology and equipment and along with Northside's highly educated and trained staff, provides patients with the best overall care possible.

Presently there are 27 acute beds and 5 health express beds in the Emergency Department. There are 84 inpatient beds and 30 observation beds in the main hospital. The ED sees approximately 44,000 patients/year and is scheduled to open a new hospital in December 2016.
